Wärdshuset Ulla Winbladh – western end of Djurgården

Located in a lovely 1897 Inn on the western end of the Djurgården, this restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating during the summer and is known for classic Swedish fare with a modern twist served in a casually Swedish formal way. While I was there during the summer and loved its outside ambience, it’s Christmas season menu or Julbord, running from mid-November to Christmas Eve, is a huge favorite.
Strandbistron – southern edge of Östermalm

During the summer, there is no better place to enjoy a crisp glass of wine and a fresh salad or an open face shrimp sandwich and enjoy the sunshine and exquisite people watching. Strandbistron, with southern exposure, is situated along a narrow promenade that separates it from the waterfront and I found to be a great place to enjoy a late afternoon snack and drink. Honestly, its dinner fare was delicious as well.
Pelikan – Heart of Södermalm

There has been a catering enterprise in the beautiful Jugendstil-inspired location at Blekingegatan 40 for more than 110 years and has an heritage as a provider of hearty Swedish food and beer since 1633. This is a unique experience and not to be missed…the most traditional Swedish dining experience around both in cuisine and understated ambience. Also not to be missed….cause why would you….is the bar with classic cocktails.

Bank Hotel

As you might imagine, the Bank Hotel did indeed start it’s life in 1910, in its Art Nouveau style, as…a Bank, and continued as such in a succession of bank entities and as an art glass exhibition hall and library. By the time it took on its present form, the solid architectural bank elements were softened and transformed into what, in my mind, is best described as a large boutique hotel. Several interesting restaurants and bars occupy the premises and make for a very unique lodging experience. If that wasn’t enough, its location is in the heart of the city between trendy Östermalm and Gamla Stan, the oldest section of Stockholm….a short walk to either.
